    Department of Audiology

Audiology is the science of studying hearing and its evaluation and management. Hearing being a complicated procedure requires very intricate care in understanding and diagnosing the very evident as well as veiled problems subsequent to abnormal procedures, associated or with hearing. Problems associated with hearing can be peripheral which can be usually identified and rehabilitated with amplification devices and appropriate therapeutic services, while that pertaining to central-auditory processing can be much more complicated and are quite difficult to recognize as they manifest very minute symptoms, challenging the examiners as well.

At K.E.Safiya Autism Centre, Audiology department has been set with an aim to extend services to population facing difficulties pertaining to hearing and its associated disorders. With an efficiently set sound treated laboratory, the centre is equipped with diagnostic instruments of International Standards from Grason-Stadler Incorporation Limited-USA. The GSI-61 clinical audiometer with the provision of covering a wide variety of subjective audiometric test procedure like Pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, special tests for differential diagnosis for cochlear (peripheral) or retro-cochlear (central) lesions. GSI tympstar is another instrument that helps assess the status of middle ear, objectively ie, irrespective of the patient's response. An oto-acoustic-emission (OAE) screener from GSI is also available in the department, which is exclusively used for hearing screening procedures.

Auditory rehabilitation procedures are also provided for paediatric and adult cases after fitting of hearing aid, and auditory training services are made available for them. Also auditory retraining therapy and auditory relaxation therapy is made available according to the need of the client.

Role of Occupational Therapy in Management of Autism

Occupational therapy is a treatment approach for persons with mental and physical disability and limitation; enable them to perform the activities alone, with limited help or with the use of assistive devices.

Childhood is hopeful, joyful and ever new. The playfulness and the joy of childhood create the context for occupational therapy with children. The occupational therapist is involved in both improving the child’s skill and adapting the environment to promote functional performance. Daily activities can best be analyzed and adapted with in contexts familiar to the child. We recognize the potential of each child and help the child reach the potential through therapeutic application of activity and adaptation of environment. Occupational therapist views the child, the child’s environment in a holistic way and identifies the child’s functional performance and with in different environment to identify the child’s strength and limitations.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disability characterized by several complex and permanent behavioural and cognitive disabilities. It can occur in children with normal or impaired intellectual function.

    Behavioural characteristic of autism:

  • Disturbance in relating to persons and thing
  • Disturbance in communication
  • Disturbance in mobility
  • Disturbance in developmental rate
  • Disturbance in sensory processing and perception

  • Some of the common feature in autism:
  • Poor eye contact
  • Poor attention and concentration
  • Body rocking and swaying
  • Toe walking
  • Head rolling and banging
  • Alternation of flexion and extension of fingers
  • Inability to act two motor acts at the same time
  • Sensory processing and perception problem
  • Visual perception problems
  • Hyperactivity

Patients unable to perform even the simple routine tasks, are taught to be independent in dialy living skills such as self care and hygienic activities, mobility and transfers, management of common environmental hardware and home management etc. Simulated activities are used to effectively train the patients. Also, the patients are taught to take care of themselves once they return to their home.

Advice on appropriate modifications is given to improve their efficiency within the home and to overcome the architectural barriers. In order to become functionally independent patients are trained to use the specially designed assistive and adaptive devices such as reachers, adapted spoons, brush, comb etc.

Speech & Language Characteristics in Autism

Beginning with speech and language in autism would be very vague, I would like to bring light on what Speech and language disorder is, “Speech and language disorders affect one's ability to talk, understand, read, and write. Such disorders have different causes, and may range from a few speech sound errors or repetitions of sounds or words to a total loss of the ability to use speech to communicate effectively (American Speech and Hearing Association).” Speech and language skills are the most critical human function allowing for full participation in society by establishing and maintaining social relationship. Can anyone think about a day without communication, I really doubt.. In one mode or the other we are communicating with our surroundings.

Speech disorders refer to impairment in the articulation of sounds, fluency, and voice. Language disorders refer to impairments in the use of the spoken (or signed or written) system and may involve the form of language (grammar and phonology), the content of language (semantics), and the function of language (pragmatics). This can be simply described as an individual’s receptive and expressive skills using speech and language.

    Speech and language pathologists are professionals who does a complete diagnostic and management of speech and language problems in;

Autism Spectrum Disorders, Delayed Speech and Language Skills, Learning Disability, Mentally Challenged, Cerebral Palsy, Hearing Impaired, Multiple Disabled, Fluency Disorders, Articulation/Pronunciation Disorders, Voice Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury/Stroke(Aphasia, Apraxia, Dysarthria) and Swallowing Disorders.

Moving on to Autism, It is defined as “a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by severe deficits in social interaction and communication, by an extremely limited range of activities and interests, and often by the presence of repetitive, stereotyped behaviours, (Houghton Mifflin Company,2009)”.

Children with autism have problems mainly in three areas i.e. communication, social skills and behavioural impairment. Not all behaviours will exist in every child. A diagnosis should be made by the child's doctor or other professional with experience in working with children with autism.

    Department of Special Education

The special school facility of KESAC opened on 9th July 2012 with Twelve students on roll, Four teachers, and 3 ayah. Within a short span of two years it is grown into a special school with 58 students, each one posing a different challenge. Yet KESAC special school created a benchmark in the field of special education through a unique way of teaching and training. research and current best practice is facilitated by well equipped, child friendly, least restrictive environment and dedicated faculties. After detailed clinical assessment and considering mental age, performance and nature of the disability of children they are classified into different groups such as pre-primary, primary, upper primary, pre-vocational, vocational and named them opal, pearl, emerald, diamond, blue diamond, ruby, coral, sapphire and Topaz. Our vocational (Topaz) training programs include ornament making, paper bags and soap making.

Apart from regular special educational activities we are focusing on co-curricular activities like arts & craft, dance, sports, and conducting monthly outing to places of importance to have an overall personal and social growth of our children.A major strength of the KESAC special teaching is its focus in all lessons, on the individual learning targets of each student. Every two months all the clinical consultants at KESAC alongside the special educator sit together and make individualized plans for each child to monitor the progress as well as plan the activities to be implemented for the next two months. Our multi-sensory curriculum is based on a holistic approach, integrating yoga and other therapies with education. We make our school lessons and activities motivating, relevant and fun with the use of best in class teaching and learning materials. The special school aims to give each child the best possible skills to have an independent life from toddlerhood to adult hood.

In the pre-primary group where we focus on early intervention, we follow Happy Tots curriculum so that the child is exposed to a complete sensory development in classroom despite the therapy procedures they follow. Individualized instructions, problem solving assignments and group works included depending on the special needs of the individual child. Our IEP sets personalized goals for each student and its tailored to the students different ability. Our teachers work closely with parents to promote learning at home. They are always in touch with other professionals like psychologists, speech therapists, occupational and physiotherapists and medical doctors, whenever the need arises, to make the child benefitted optimally from our school.
